Hyenas-Hyena Pups-Africa
Hyenas are second on the predator chain in Tanzania and Kenya. After Lions, Hyenas, especially in groups, can take down most large animals they encounter. Cheetahs must quickly drag their prey into hiding or eat immediately because hyenas will drive them off of their kill. We watched a group follow an injured male Zebra, many times their size, and in the night, they killed him.
In the Mara Triangle very close to the Mara River we followed a group of females at dusk and found a den and three very young pups—a very rare opportunity. A group of 8 or ten females were all tending to the very active weeks old pups. Seen by some as ugly and loathsome creatures, the hyena mother and nursemaids were tender and very attentive to their little pups.
