Cambodia: Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh
Cambodia is a stunning land of contrasts. Conspicuously and ridiculously rich and abjectly poor. Children sent to beg-and worse-at five. Millions of left over land mines dot the countryside and run right up the the edges many of the ruins, still waiting to be cleared after the decades long war with the Khmer Rouge which seems to have sort of ended--but maybe not completely--in the late 80's. A rich history with Angkor Wat being the center of a vast and advanced civilization that existed from around the 9th century until late in the 13th. The ruins are stunning but overrun with tourists--now over 70 hotels in Siem Reap.
