A cod fishing culture since its discovery in the 1400s by John Cabot, Newfoundland is now struggling with fishing restrictions caused by overfishing and the exploitation of the Capelin bait fish by the Japanese since the mid-1980s. Newfoundland was part of the United Kingdom until 1949, when it became part of Canada.
