Yellowstone by Snowmobile
In January of 2010 I spent four days snowmobiling through what is arguably America's greatest national park: Yellowstone. Located in the northwest corner of Wyoming and stretching a bit into a corner of Montana, over 2million acres of untouched wilderness.
Winter is the best--perhaps the only--time to visit. Only 300 snowmobiles--all required to have four-stroke engines to significantly reduce pollution--are allowed in this vast area a day--and all must be guided. Animals are abundant because they have come down from the high mountains because of the deeper snow and scare food at higher elevations. It is quiet, unhurried, magnificent--cold--one of America's true treasures.
The trip started in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, where I spent two days in the Teton National Park and saw many animals within 5 miles of the city: Moose, Bison, Pronghorn Antelope, Coyote, Trumpeter Swans, Bald Eagles, Rocky Mountain Sheep and thousands of Elk in the National Elk Reserve that actually runs right into downtown Jackson Hole.
This travel album is arranged chronologically. These images can also be found in other galleries whose themes represent the image.
